The Friends of Saxonia House is a nonprofit corporation created to purchase and restore the 1855 half timber frame ("fachwerk") house that is believed to be the largest structure of it's kind in Wisconsin and perhaps in the entire United States. The 72' x 35' two story structure was built by Ernst Klessing and his wife in 1854-1855 as an inn, a brewery, a gathering place, a post office, a dance hall and a Turn Verein ("Turner") association meeting place. Half timber construction is reported to be the most important and distinctive architectural style brought to the United States by European immigrants.
The building, in it's current state is in need of significant restoration and should only be viewed from a safe distance as the building is unstable. Funds are currently being collected to restore the building to it's former glory. If you would like more information on how you can help please contact us a firstname.lastname@example.org.
